Refugees coming to Canada should consider settling in smaller cities and towns with available shelters that could facilitate their settlement.

As cities like Toronto and Montreal run out of shelters, it is becoming more important for refugees coming across the border to move to small cities to reduce the overcapacity of spaces for housing them temporarily.

In an interview with Mosaic Edition, Janet Madume, Executive Director Welland Heritage Council and Multicultural Centre said smaller towns could play a role in easing the congestion in shelters for refugees.

She hoped the smaller cities would be well funded to house the refugees that choose to come to the area.

“For anyone moving to Canada, try the smaller cities,” stated Janet Madume.

Canada is witnessing an influx of refugees crossing the border to avoid deportation from the US following various changes in policies.

Toronto Mayor, John Tory has requested for more financial help from the provincial and federal governments to help the city cope with the acute shortage of shelters for refugees.
