Press Statement

CALGARY, AB – Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, responded to the decision to scrap the lottery system and modify the application for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program:

“Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives are pleased that the Liberals have finally listened to our calls to scrap the family reunification lottery, given that these changes should never have been introduced in the first place.

“Over the past few years, I have heard from dozens of people who felt like they had lost hope that they would ever be able to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada.

“Conservatives called for the government to fix the systematic problems that plagued the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program, but instead the Trudeau government implemented a “luck of the draw” system. This was a complete and total abdication of responsibility. I look forward to reviewing the details of the modifications to the application process and will examine whether they respond to the issues with client service that many Canadians and newcomers experience.

“Today’s backtrack by the Liberals is yet another example of his this government has failed to show leadership on this file. Conservatives will continue to hold the Liberal government to account to ensure that our immigration system is fair and compassionate.”
